Hero Bio:
Elmer Jefferson Bell was born at Cloverdale, Nye County, Nevada, on September 11, 1894. Except for the time spent in attending school at the Polytechnic Business College in Oakland, California, from which he graduated with honors, his life was spent on the ranch and in the saddle. He was a good horseman and loved to hunt. Being a marksman of exceptional ability, he won honors as such in the Service.
At the time he enlisted in the Marine Corps he was studying law. This was on the I7th of April 1918. He spent about two months at Mare Island, California, and from there was sent to Philadelphia, with Company 22, Regiment 1, United States Marine Corps. He was serving there when he was stricken with influenza which caused his death on the 2d of October 1918.
The remains were sent back to Nevada and were buried on the ranch at Reese River after impressive military services in Tonopah. The Nye County Post of the American Legion now bears his name. Elmer descended from a long line of American patriots. His great-great-grandfather and his great-grandfather both fought for the flag in the Revolution, his kinsmen were with Andy Jackson at New Orleans in the war of 1812, and others of them marched under our battle flags at Buena Vista and Monterey when our armies vanquished Mexico.
He was the son of the late Senator Thomarç J. Bell and of Mary J. Bell of Reese River, Nevada. Besides his mother, he is also survived by the following brothers and sisters; Annie W. Worthington and Sadie E. Bell of Austin, Nevada; Cecil G. and Frank E. Bell of Reese River; Walter L. Bell of Yerington, Nevada; and Lester C. Bell, 20 Franklin Street, San Francisco, California.
